one-on-one mentoring

All Our Kids matches a group of 20-25 students with 6-8 mentors from the community. Adults from professional groups, volunteer organizations, local corporations, small businesses and faith-based organizations are recruited, carefully screened and then trained to serve as volunteer mentors. Each community volunteer is asked to make a minimum commitment of one year to this relationship, but we strongly encourage mentors to make a long-term investment in their students, in order to follow them from middle school through their high school graduation and beyond.

Individually, each mentor is assigned to 4-6 students within that larger group. Mentors work with this small group on goal setting, social and interpersonal skills, and other activities planned by the program staff. Outside of the classroom, mentors are expected to make a weekly phone call to each student in their small group.

The All Our Kids staff plans monthly meetings for students and their mentors after school hours, with a focus on academic skills, annual growth plans, life-skills education, tutoring, counseling, field trips, recreational or social events and community service projects. Students and mentors meet outside of monthly meetings with their mentors and do a variety of activities together including:

  • Going to movies
    Attending local sport games
    Helping with homework
    Doing Community Service

Commitment

  • One Year (preferably longer)
Spend 4-6 hours each month with the students in:
    • monthly agency structured student/mentor activities
    • weekly phone contact with the students
    • at least 2 hours in face-to-face individual activities
